Notes:

The application numbers in this report differ from the numbers of applications used for computing NIH success rates that are reported elsewhere, because this report:

  • Counts resubmission applications for the same projects received in the same fiscal year individually, whereas they are counted collectively for calculating success rates;
  • Shows applications by date of initial peer review, which is not always the same year to which the application is assigned for calculating success rates.
  • Includes applications from all activity codes; and
  • Includes all applications reviewed by NIH peer reviewers regardless of the funding source or funding agency. For certain initiatives involving other agencies or countries, the NIH may perform the review as a service or funding partner.

The distribution of activity codes does not count subprojects or components of complex applications as separate applications. Therefore, a U54 application with seven components is counted as one application.

Applications with an activity code of SB1 are included under a major activity code of R instead of S.
