Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT)
Welcome to the Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT). The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce new users to the RePORT web site, and provide help to current users.
In addition to carrying out its scientific mission, one of NIHs goals is to exemplify and promote the highest level of public accountability. To that end, the Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT) provides a central point of access to reports, data, and analyses of NIH research activities, including information on NIH expenditures and the results of NIH-supported research.
This tutorial will review the basic features of the RePORT web site and show users how to navigate the site and maximize the utility of the information available.
The RePORT tutorial has been divided into separate learning sections modules. Each of these buttons sections listed below you see at the bottom corresponds to a specific web site section on the web site. You can either follow the recommended path by clicking the first module button at the bottom and working to the last module on the right, or choose your own path and start at any given point. You have choice of navigating forward and back by clicking on ‘Next’ and ‘Previous’ links below each section or by scrolling up and down.
Frequently Requested Reports
Frequently Requested Reports section contains a list of reports that are requested most often by users.
The table on this page provides access to the most frequently requested data on NIH extramural programs (total amount of funding, number of awards, average size of an award, and success rates), broken down in various ways, as indicated by the heading of each row of this table.
Reports
The Reports section provides access to a searchable database of Reports. These Reports have been categorized by: the ICs included in the Reports; the portfolio being reported on; the budget mechanisms and activities through which the programs included in the Report are funded; the topic of the Report (for statistical Reports, the type of data presented); the variables by which data are presented (used for charts and Reports in tabular format), and the years covered by the Report.
Several drop-down menus on the page can be used to narrow search for data. To find information on success rates for R01 applications submitted to all NIH Institutes and Centers in fiscal year 2007 the user would select All Institutes and Centers, R01 as activity, the success rate data type, and 2007 for the time period. A list of Reports matching the user’s search criteria is shown on Reports search results screen.
Clicking on the blue question mark provides a definition of filters and columns in the Report listing.
Detailed Report Map
Below the drop-down menus is a Report map that provides a quick and easy way to find Reports that can be classified by NIH budget mechanisms and some of the more commonly used activity codes.
Reports search results screen shows a list of Reports that match the user’s search criteria.
Advanced Search
Advanced Search button on Reports section allows the user to select multiple values of filters used to narrow the search.
Reports search results screen shows a list of Reports that match the user’s search criteria.
Category Spending
The Categorical Spending section displays the annual support level for various Research, Condition, and Disease Categories (RCDC) based on grants, contracts, and other funding mechanisms used across the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
RePORTER
RePORTER is an upgraded version of CRISP that provides enhanced searching capabilities and access to the results (publications and patents) of both intramural and extramural projects funded by NIH. It also links to related information in other databases such as the National Library of Medicine’s Medline. RePORTER provides access to records of projects funded each year from fiscal year 1985 to the present. The query form allows the user to generate queries by entering terms or making fielded selections. The results of the query are returned in a project listing that includes the project number, subproject identifier (if applicable), project title, contact principal investigator, performing organization, fiscal year of funding, NIH administering and funding Institutes and Centers (IC), and the fiscal year total costs provided by each funding IC. The project number, subproject id, and the project title are clickable and linked to more detailed information on several Project Information pages: Description, the science being conducted; Detail, administrative and budget details on the project; Results, the publications and patents associated with the project; History, past years’ project information; and Subprojects (for multi-project grants only), all of the component subprojects.
Glossary
The Glossary section contains a list of terms commonly used in NIH reports, with accompanying definitions in alphabetical order.
The user has the choice to navigate the terms by clicking on the page number at the bottom of the page, clicking on alphabet the term begins with, on top of the page, or searching for a specific term by entering the term in the Quick Search text box provided on top of the page.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This section contains a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) by those who are looking for reports and data on NIH programs. The questions are grouped by specific topics which are listed on top of the page. Each of these topics is a link that takes the user to that specific topic questions when clicked.
Links
The Links section provides the user with a wide variety of data, statistics, strategic plans, policy studies, program evaluations, and other sources of reports on biomedical and behavioral research programs, as well as broader science-related information resources.
Contact Us
Contact Us section contains an easy to use form, to provide feedback or inquire about certain section of the web site. User can select the section of the site from the drop down list, fill the fields with asterisk (*) (the required fields) and add specific comments in the Comments/Feedback text box.
